Amazon buys eleven planes and builds its own fleet to deliver
The e-commerce giant has bought eleven Boeings from two American airlines and will turn them into cargo planes
Amazon now buys its own planes. The e-commerce giant wants to better deliveries, as the coronavirus pandemic has caused orders to explode while pushing airlines to reduce their fleets.
On Tuesday, the company announced the acquisition of 11 Boeing 767-300s from Delta and WestJet. The aircraft will be converted into cargo planes. This is the first time the group has launched its own fleet instead of signing leases with airlines.
The travel industry in crisis
Having its own fleet in addition to rental aircraft allows Amazon to "better manage [its] operations," said Sarah Rhoads, vice president of Amazon Global Air. Westjet's four aircraft will join Amazon's fleet this year, while the seven aircraft purchased from Delta will be ready in 2022.
Since the beginning of the health crisis, Amazon has gone to great lengths in logistics (warehouses, recruitment, means of transport) to manage the surge in online orders. The travel and tourism industry has suffered greatly. In the United States,a support plan provides $16 billion in aid to save tens of thousands of airline jobs and $2 billion for airports.
